Ear surgery

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is done to fix prominent, oversized, or otherwise abnormal ears. Whether it be a congenital disability, an injury-related deformity, or a difference in ear shape or size, this cosmetic and reconstructive procedure can help. Whether a child or an adult, the surgery will change the outward appearance of the ear. After the ears have reached 85 to 90 percent of their adult size, typically around the age of five, the procedure to reconstruct the ears’ shape, size, and position can be performed.

Benefits of Ear Surgery:

With otoplasty, the ears can be reshaped and repositioned to match the rest of the face better. It can boost self-assurance and lessen or eliminate the emotional impact of bullying.

Best Candidates

Patients who are good candidates for otoplasty are those who are in generally good health, have no actively progressing diseases or severe, preexisting medical conditions, and have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure. Otoplasty can be performed on patients of any age once their ears have fully developed. It usually manifests between the ages of 5 and 6. This procedure typically involves young patients between the ages of 4 and 14.

Procedure

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure used to bring protruding ears back in alignment with the rest of the head by reshaping, crafting, or removing cartilage. There will be no damage to your hearing from this procedure. It does not affect the middle or inner ear, which is responsible for hearing.

The first step is to make an incision behind the ear, close to where it is attached to the head. The surgeon will remove some cartilage and skin to get the desired outcome. Before permanently securing the cartilage, the surgeon may trim and reshape it. Sometimes the surgeon will use stitches to permanently reshape the cartilage rather than removing any of the cartilage. Scars from incisions are less noticeable behind the ear.
